Professor at the Technical University of Crete (TUC), School of Production Engineering and Management (PEM) in the scientific field of Heat Transfer and Process Engineering; Visiting Professor at Imperial College London (ICL), Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Collaborating Faculty Member of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), Institute of Geoenergy; and Founder & CEO of the spin-off company Viridiance Insights.
Diploma in Chemical Engineering (1991) from the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and PhD in Engineering from the same School (2000).
Engineering Consultant at SPEED Development S.A (1992-1998), Postdoctoral Researcher (2000-2014) and Laboratory Teaching Staff at NTUA (2014-2018). Member of the academic community of the TUC since 2018, teaching “Heat Transfer”, “Fluid Mechanics” and “Rational Energy Management of Production Systems” in PEM School, Transport Phenomena II at the School of Chemical Engineering of TUC and “Smart and Sustainable Systems in Agriculture and Water Management” in CIHEAM MAICh.
His work focuses on the Green, Digital, and Social Transition of key community systems, drawing on four core research pillars: Process Engineering, Circular Economy, Energy and Environmental Systems Management, and Digital Technologies, all contributing to sustainable and resilient development. A central element of his research activity is the exploitation of emerging Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for the design and implementation of innovative solutions in critical productive sectors, including industry, agriculture, energy systems, water resources management systems, and livestock farming. Emphasis is placed on the development of advanced Process and System Modelling and Optimization methodologies, as well as on the use of Artificial Intelligence for the creation of Digital Twins and Cyber-Physical Systems, supporting the transition toward intelligent, interconnected, and efficient production systems.
His research activity has resulted in a substantial body of Publications: 65 articles in peer-reviewed international journals (41 in the last five years), 96 conference proceedings papers (57 in the last five years), 6 educational textbooks (2 in the last five years), and 5 chapters in edited volumes (2 in the last five years). Founder and scientific coordinator of the Digital and Industrial Innovations Research Group (indigo) at TUC. The group brings together a multidisciplinary team of more than 20 researchers, including faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, PhD candidates, and undergraduate students, working collectively on cutting-edge research and innovation in support of sustainable, circular, and digitally enabled solutions. Founder and CEO of the spin-off company Viridiance Insights, established to translate cutting-edge academic research into practical, market-ready solutions, focusing on enabling the green and digital transition through advanced analytics, circular economy innovation, and technology-driven environmental intelligence. Founding member and Coordinator of the In-Crete Innovation Alliance, a collaborative platform uniting all academic and research institutions of Crete together with leading private-sector enterprises. The Alliance’s mission is to drive regional innovation by promoting, supporting, and scaling circular-economy initiatives across the region, fostering stronger knowledge transfer, cross-sector collaboration, and sustainable industrial transformation.” Founder and mentor of the InnoGo Student Group, a dynamic team of ten students based at TUC and engaging in innovation, engineering, and entrepreneurship activities, having successfully competed in both national and European competitions, achieving notable distinctions and recognition for their work.”
Principal Investigator of 20 Research Projects, mainly funded by the European Commission, with a total budget of €8.2 million for the indigo research group to date. Among these, he serves as Coordinator of 4 projects and Technical and Scientific Manager of 2 projects. Active member of several prominent European networks, among them ICT4Water, BRIDGE, ECOSYSTEX, and SUSAN. Through these networks, he contributes to joint actions on digital innovation, circular economy solutions, sustainable resource management, and cross-sector knowledge exchange.”
